My name is Kelly Sunshawl. Before transitioning to a career in accounting and cryptocurrency, I spent several years as a wildland firefighter in the United States. My journey into firefighting was born out of a desire for adventure, but it was far from the easy path I had imagined.

Life as a wildland firefighter

Life as a firefighter was both exhilarating and grueling. My days were often filled with intense physical training, long shifts, and unpredictability.

The smell of smoke became a constant companion, and the adrenaline rush of battling blazes was both addictive and exhausting.

One of the most challenging aspects of my job was dealing with the emotional toll of constant danger. I vividly remember the day we responded to a blowup that nearly killed half our crew.

In addition to the emotional strain, there were physical injuries. I battled through back and hip pain as a result of old injuries plus the heavy gear and relentless physical demands of the job.

There were nights when I would get back to base camp, exhausted, barely able to move, and wondering if I was pushing my body beyond its limits.

Despite these struggles, my determination to follow through with what I started never wavered. But as time passed, the demanding schedule and physical exertion took their toll on me. Eventually, I made the difficult decision to transition out of firefighting and into a more stable career path. That’s when I decided to use my math and computer skills to pursue accounting.

My first bitcoin purchase

I got into cryptocurrency by chance. Around 2012, I first heard about Bitcoin on CNBC. I was curious but dismissed it, thinking it was only for tech-savvy individuals. However, by 2013, when Bitcoin surged to $1,100, I regretted my earlier dismissal.

By 2015, Bitcoin’s price had dropped to $250, and I decided it was time to re-evaluate my stance. I immersed myself in research, uncovering Bitcoin’s potential to disrupt traditional banking and currency systems. With a renewed sense of purpose, I bought my first Bitcoins through Coinbase, investing $750 for three coins.

In 2016, I expanded my investments, purchasing Ether starting at $8 each. The crypto market surged dramatically in 2017, and my portfolio’s value skyrocketed by almost 10,000%! However, the thrill was short-lived as the market experienced a massive downturn in 2018.

Jarring volatility – humbling

The market crash in 2018 was a pivotal moment. I faced significant financial setbacks, and the losses were disheartening. But much like the challenges I faced as a firefighter, I saw this as an opportunity to learn and grow. Vowing to not give up, I dedicated myself to mastering the complexities of crypto investing.

Through continuous learning, strategic adjustments, and persistence, I began earning six figures annually from my crypto portfolio.

My journey through firefighting, the emotional and physical struggles, and my subsequent transition into crypto investing shaped who I am today. I soon realized that my experiences could help others navigate their own financial journeys.

Inspired by this realization, I founded Life with Crypto, a social learning website aimed at guiding others through the intricate world of crypto and blockchain.
